Yangon, Myanmar - An official in Myanmar says a gold mine has collapsed in the east of the country, killing at least 16 people.

Lawmaker Thaung Shwe said on Friday that heavy rains caused the accident late on Wednesday in the town of Kalaw in Shan state.

Kalaw is about 400 kilometres north of the main city, Yangon.

He says several people are still trapped in the mine and rescuers were trying to clear debris away in search of survivors. - Sapa-AP
